I can't believe it's been almost 5 months since my last post!! I got caught up in the busyness of summer -- gardening, yardwork, canning... figuring out the ropes of being a new mom -- my son is now almost 9 months (how did that happen?!?)... and harvest time -- I'm married to a farmer.

I am looking forward to investing some more time into my vintage shop on Etsy, and hopefully the blog as well. I recently opened up a vintage shop on Zibbet. I was drawn to Zibbet because there is a basic account option, with no fees!! As much as I love Etsy, (I've been there for years), the fees are a bit of a pain. I'm hoping for some success on Zibbet. I have such a mountain of vintage stuff that needs to be listed (and sold!)!!

My time has also been divided, because I'm been helping my mom in her new endeavour, Sweet Sparrow Design. I'm mostly doing PR work... helping with her Facebook page... Zibbet and Etsy shops... and Twitter. If you're a cloth-diapering mom or not, you should check out her shops! We're hoping to add many new products in 2011... working on baby legs, toddler belts, pacifier clips, and LOTS more!!

I just love vintage tea/dish towels. It reminds me of my grandmother and the hand embroidery she did. She did not do a lot of different hand work, but there was seldom a time when she did not have a hand embroidery project in the works for someone. I remember her teaching me when I was in my young teens. I stitched a beautiful set of pillow cases with a row of lilacs across the end.

Here is a perfect set of towels I came across in our local thrift store. They are beautifully stitched on vintage cotton. Each day of the week the woman has a different project on these towels.

Monday she is doing laundry.
Tuesday she is weeding in the garden.
Wednesday she is watering her flower garden.
Thursday looks like she might be going visiting with a basket.
Friday she is picking flowers in the garden.
Saturday she is doing baking.
Sunday she is looking her best in a beautiful dress and parasol.

Now all I have to do is decide if I want to add these to my stash or put them up in my Etsy shop.

My Original 60's Vintage Vehicle

When you truly love vintage it flows over into all areas of your life. My husband and I just purchases this gem of vintage last weekend!

This is a 1968 Monaco 500 in near original condition. It has a 383 magnum motor. It is original to this car and was redone about 2000 miles ago. The paint and interior are original. It runs like a charm. We are so excited and can't wait for the weather to get nicer that we can actually take it for a run!

Christmas is coming...

It's hard to believe it's November 7th already. Generally, I start to get into the Christmas mood once the snow hits the ground. This year, I've started a little sooner. Last week while thrifting, I came across a dozen gorgeous mid-century glass indent ornaments and a dozen of multi-colored plain glass ornaments. I was thrilled! I love finding these old ornaments, with their unique patina. Now I know what's going on my tree this year.

With online shopping nowadays... "shopping local" can take on a whole new meaning. It's very easy to find great online sellers, who are just around the corner from you. Etsy, and all the other online marketplaces, have a way of bringing people together. A Vintage Harvest in the Kitchen

There is nothing like fall for me! The days are warm and nights are cool. The gardens are full of produce and trees laden with fruit. It does make me sigh when I think of all the produce I want to prepare for the freezer and pantry.
This week in my Etsy browsing I came across some lovely vintage items to make yours and my canning season easier. If you are not big on preserving maybe you would like some of these items to bring the vintage harvest time decor into your kitchen.

Feeding the addiction...

I have a really hard time passing up Pyrex or Anchor Hocking Fire King pieces at thrift stores that are reasonably priced and in good condition. Either they will end up in my (ever-growing) Pyrex collection if it's a pattern I'm collecting or it will end up in my Etsy shop, ready to make it's way to a new home.

This week I was checking out the local thrift store and there it was... a #402 yellow (1.5 quart) Pyrex New Dots bowl. I turned the bowl over to check the price... a mere 75 cents! I quickly snatched it up, somewhat in disbelief that no one else had.

Then something else caught my eye... peach lusterware. I've been collecting this for just over a year now. It was an Anchor Hocking Fire King 1.5 quart Oval Casserole with the original lid! (It's pretty rare to find original lids) That I snapped up for $2.50. I'm thinking that both dishes will stay put in my kitchen for awhile. :)

A couple weeks earlier, I stumbled across this blue and white Pyrex 1.5 quart Oval Casserole for $2.50. It isn't a pattern I instantly recognized, so I'll need to do a little more research. If anyone knows what this pattern is called, I'd be happy for the info. Not sure yet if this one will stay in my kitchen or get listed in my shop...

***UPDATE: This pattern is called Horizon Blue.***

Like it or not we know that our summer season is coming to an end!

Here are some wonderful pieces that would be a great addition to your fall and winter wardrobe.

This colorful scarf would add great fall color to a plain t-shirt or office blouse.

This Borglaska faux fur is very plush and soft in dark rich brown and has the look of sheared beaver. Just the coat to snuggle into when the cold weather comes.

Here is a great navy slip to wear under a suit or it could be used as a slip/dress.

What about this wonderfully classic little purple jacket to brighten up your winter work wardrobe.

The Laundry Room

My laundry room is in desperate need of a makeover... and I do mean desperate! We live in an old house from the 1920s (which I love dearly), but the basement is a bit dark and dreary. It's not at the top of our priorities right now, since we're starting on another renovation project in a different part of the house. But... that doesn't keep me from looking for ideas for when we do have time to overhaul it.

Taking My Etsy Photography Outside - New Items to be Listed

I have been struggling with finding a good spot for shooting my Etsy photos. I am not sure if other Etsy sellers take as many pictures as I do. I think part of the problem is that my home has warm colors and is not well lit. This last week the sun was shinning so nicely that I decided to take my photo shoot outside. I was quite impressed with the shots.

What are your thoughts on these photos of my new items to list?

Does the outdoor scenery take away from the item?

Do any of you struggle to get good lighting?

Any good tips?

I don't know about the rest of you who are sellers on Etsy, but I find the competition is getting stiffer and stiffer... more and more people are joining and I feel like I really have to step it up to have my shop get noticed. So I'm always thrilled when my shop or one of the items from my shop gets noticed or featured.

Chandelier Crystal Jewelry Inspiration

I have always loved the chandelier crystals!

I have a number of sets of crystals for sale in my shop. Since I have quite a collection of them I have decided to work on a pendant for myself. It might take me a bit to get it done since I am not a jewelry maker. At this point I am just playing around with it and hoping to come up with something that I like. I am not happy with the design yet, but I thought I would show you what I was working on.

It's that time again.... time for Etsy's 2nd Annual Yart Sale, running June 10-14. This is my first year participating and I'm hoping for some sales! :) If you're a seller on Etsy and are wondering what the Yart Sale is.... there is a great post in the Storque that explains everything.

I think that even if you don't get a ton of sales as a result of participating in the sale, it is a great way to drive traffic to your shop and get exposure.

There is just something about the ticking of a wind up alarm clock that brings me back to my Grandma's house in my younger years.
My parents would put us down to have a nap in Grandma and Grandpa's room. Being a hyperactive child, I did not do naps. The only comforting sounds was the tick tock of the clock on the bedside table as the other children napped.
Here are three of the clocks that are part of my collection.

These are my four vintage alarm clocks. The large silver one is battery-operated. The other three are all wind-up (though I rarely wind them, since the sound drives me crazy!). They are great through when decorating, to add character to a room.

The collection is growing...

When I moved when I got married, almost 4 years ago... I packed away many of my things from my old house. Several of those boxes have remained packed away until now... the items in them not needed, forgotten... The other day I remembered there were a few things that I hadn't seen since I moved and wondered where they were. So I opened one of the boxes, and this is what I found:

Two little #080 8 Oz Individual Round Casseroles! One in Flamingo Pink and one in Dove Grey. I completely forgot I had these and was thrilled to find them, since I have never come across these again! They are marked "PYREX, Made in Canada". I LOVE Pyrex, in all shapes and sizes, but I have to say that these miniature casseroles really are the cutest things ever!!

Also, a Turquoise Amish Butterprint Butter Dish. Marked "28, PYREX, Made in U.S.A."

And here is another recent thrift store find... a Turquoise Amish Butterprint Cinderella Mixing Bowl. Marked #443 (2.5 quart), Made in U.S.A.

I can't decide if I'm going to part with any of these beautiful dishes... or if they will just join my ever-growing collection of Pyrex... :)

Can anyone give me a clue as to what kind it is. I have been in touch with Replacements.com, but they cannot help me. It is missing mugs or tea cups and saucers and I would like to get some of these to complete the set.

I commented on the set when my friend owned it about 10 years ago. Not long after that as we were helping her move once again, she said that they would stay at the new home until they retired.
I told her "wanna make a bet?" I was just joking...not believing her as they had an above average number of moves in their history.
Next thing I knew she said,"If we move then you get this china!"
I explained to her I was just joking, and did not really believe that they would stay there that long, but did not want her to give up the china.
A year or two later the china was mine. I did not want to take it, but she insisted!
Here it is in it's entirety.

This set consists of:
1 lrg. platter
1 sm. platter
1 gravy boat
3 serving bowls(2/w lids)
12 dinner plates
12 luncheon plates
9 bread and butter plates
11 soup bowls
11 dessert bowls

These are the only markings that this china has. It looks like a W. Then a different number on each type of dish.

Any help anyone can offer me on the identification of this set would be greatly appreciated.

Ahhh... Spring...

For those of you that live in Canada or the more northern States... you know what I mean. After a long Winter, when it starts to warm up... it smells like Spring! What a wonderful smell! You start thinking about what you're all going to plant in your garden this year, hoping you can pack away your Winter parka and snow boots shortly, anxiously eyeing the sandals in the back of your closet... It's exciting!

Collections: Part 2

Mugs....

Okay, so I have a few coffee mugs... well, maybe a few more than just a few. I don't really want to count them because I would probably realize I had far too many, but I know I have more than 30... probably closer to 40. Many I use, some I don't. But I love mugs. My favorite mugs are the small, stackable kind that were made in Japan. Hardly sensible, since I love a BIG cup of coffee.

{ This is a set of four stackable butterfly mugs, marked Made in Japan. I *LOVE* these and I don't think I'll ever part with them! }

{ These two are the same size and style as the butterfly mugs, also Made in Japan. Blue and green design with flowers and birds. }

{ These two are simple and super cute. Made in Japan. Plain white with a very retro orange and red flower design, these are classic. }

{ This one I found all on its own... it's a keeper though! Made in Japan. With a blue faux bois background, coffee break lettering on the front side, and mod flower design on the other side... it is one of a kind. }

{ My Mom's mugs are also made in Japan. They are newly listed in her shop Lucky's Vintage. }

My Latest Vintage Finds...Pyrex & Glasbake

I have had some fabulous finds at the Thrift Store. Most of this was yesterday except for the lime green Pyrex pie/baking dish. I just had to put it next to the matching cups and saucers though for the picture! I am thinking I will probably list these all in my Etsy shop soon. I am tempted though to keep the candy orange colored casserole.

Here is a listing of the items:

My Vintage Roots

It's hard to know when I first began to value vintage. I think back to my childhood and some of my fondest memories are of my Grandmother and Grandfather's Thrift store. I saw many things come through this place that were original for one reason or another. I remember begging my grandma for a wedding gown that I wanted to dress up in at about the age of 5 or 6. I did get it and had so much fun playing bride in it out on the summer lawn with my cousin!

Another cool thing was that they actually shopped for the thrift store at a "Baggage Sale". Not sure if any of you have heard of this, but it was an auction of luggage that had been lost or left behind from traveling and they purchased the luggage full and not knowing what was in it! Can you believe that? Sounds kinda gross, but ...wow...I had so much fun helping sort through this luggage and opening each one was like a treasure hunt looking for jewelry or other trinkets.

Then of course my grandparents loved to travel across North America in their station wagon, doing the flea markets! They would sell and buy at these sales and of course visit with all the friends they made along the way.

Grandma also loved to collect. She had a variety of collections that I remember. She had a doll collection numbering in the hundreds. She had a button collection and sewed the buttons onto large pieces of felt and hung them up on the walls in the family room. What I wouldn't give for these buttons today! I also remember collections of salt and pepper shakers and plates. Most of these collections were sold as a collection as she moved on to another one.

Just for fun here is a picture of my grandparents all dressed up during fair week in the early 60's. They have both passed on and probably would get a real kick out of me and my vintage Etsy shop.
Somewhere along the way I got the bug of loving vintage. Really I can never remember not loving it.

Here are some random facts about me:

~ Almost all my furniture is vintage, antique or used.

~ I bought my first piece of vintage at the age of 14. It was a round top steam trunk that was old when my mother was young(early 1930's). I bought it from my other Grandmother for $50. That was expensive for me at the time, but I really wanted it.

~ I won a set of vintage/antique china in a casual bet made with a friend. (I will have to feature this set as I have yet to identify it. Even Replacements.com is not able to help me. Maybe some of my vintage friends can help.)

~ I have 3 large vintage/antique area rugs in my home given to us by friends!

~ We live in a home over 100 years old and have completely renovated it. This includes refinishing the original hardwood floors. The main floor has hardwood ceilings also and the house has a stone foundation!

So I hope that you have learned something new about me. I am vintage through and through! Opps!?? What did I say? Ok..hummm....well, I am getting there fast.

Collections: Part 1

Collections... most people have a collection of some kind... books, buttons, etc. I have many {small} collections. Nothing extensive, nothing obsessive, but each one is slowly growing. I'm going to share them, one at a time. This time, it's my Peach Lusterware {mini} collection.

The first time I saw a piece of Peach Lusterware, I was in L-O-V-E. It has such a rich color, that shines and moves and catches the light. I love how an everyday dish, such as a casserole dish, can really be a show-stopper with that peach finish. It somehow makes a meal more special.

I haven't been collecting Peach Lusterware for very long, only for a few months, and it is tough to find around here... but I've had some luck. Of the Fire King Anchor Hocking Peach Lusterware, I've picked up a 1 1/2 Qt. divided casserole dish for $1.00, a small round casserole dish with lid for $0.75, two laurel tea cups for $0.20 each, and two custard dishes for $0.15 each. As well, I have a few other Peach Lusterware dishes, a teacup and saucer marked Made in Japan and a lovely sugar (?) container with floral design. I can't remember what I paid for those. Good deals!
